James Patterson’s philanthropy is rooted in a simple belief: reading changes lives. To date, he has contributed more than $220 million to strengthen reading, writing, and educational opportunities across the United States.

His giving supports the full literacy ecosystem—independent booksellers, librarians, teachers, writers, and literacy-focused organizations and programs—recognizing that strong communities of readers are built by the people who bring books and learning to life every day.

Patterson has also endowed over 1,000 scholarships at colleges and universities nationwide, including over 600 HBCUs, giving students access to higher education to pursue careers in teaching, writing, and public service. A major area of focus is advancing evidence-based literacy instruction, including significant support for the University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI), a national leader in improving reading outcomes for children.

Together, these investments reflect a long-term commitment to expanding access to literacy, empowering educators and students, and ensuring that reading remains a powerful pathway to opportunity for generations to come.
