Flags of Our Fathers – An incredible amount of genius, talent, craftsmanship and care went into the making of this story about the Second World War. In my view though, the bar has to be set very high when a film's subject matter is the value of heroes and patriotic symbols -- especially at a time when this country is at war. Setting the record straight about Iwo Jima and its famous memorial is a good thing, but the problems around the time of the Second World War continue to be problems today: the quality of leadership and of the media in this country. As a little side bar, what does it say about film critics when nearly every reviewer has to talk about how amazing it is that someone in their mid-seventies can create extraordinary art?
