PICK OF THE WEEK
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby – A pretty cool parody of the kind of bio-pic they might do on a NASCAR driver. A lot of funny language, but could have used a few more funny scenes. Very nice writing by Will Ferrell.
Scoop – Woody might surprise me sometime in the future but I think it might be time for him to concentrate his efforts behind the cam instead of in front of the lens. This is definitely a watered down Allen vehicle.
Clerks II – This probably says a lot about me but I liked this movie quite a lot, even better than the original. It's well-written and funny, but you have to be in to 30-ish slackers.
The Groomsmen – The movies Ed Burns writes & directs himself are usually pretty good and this is no exception The acting is pretty terrific, with Burns being the weakest link. One critic wrote that none of the characters are likeable and I think that says an awful lot abut the critic. This is a movie that really captures the good, the bad, and the very ugly about modern men.
Monster House – It is very well done, but I think it's too scary for a lot of kids. Also, the last third is really off the wall.
Lady in the Water – I walked on this one half way. Maybe it got great after I left, but I'll never know.
Miami Vice – There's a really cool love affair in this one, but I'm sorry to say I prefer the TV show. In my humble opinion, thrillers are supposed to thrill.
