PICK OF THE WEEK
Freedomland – I've loved Richard Price's fiction since I read The Wanderers which I believe he wrote at Cornell. Most of the review of Freedom Land, (which Price wrote) weren't very stellar, but I'll tell you, this movie was made with a lot of heart. Also, I've seen crazy people (I worked my way through college at a mental hospital) and
Julianne Moore is great in this role. She's been beaten up buy some critics but they're totally full of it.
Running Scared – Quentin Tarantino (a very nice guy) has great things to say about this flick, but I don't. It packs a wallop at times and it's different, but it just doesn't work. For me anyway. Hollywood is trying to kill the thriller with turkeys like these.
16 Blocks – At last, a pretty good thriller. Bruce Willis and Mos Def are terrific together and theirs is a fresh twist on the buddy-buddy routine. Weak ads and trailers, but worth a trip to the cineplex.
Madea's Family Reunions – Tyler Perry's movies are always a little rough around the edges, but they also have something hugely important to say. Alex Cross is a huge Madea fan.
Dave Chappelle's Block Party – A whole lot of great talent, a party not to be missed, unless--big unless--you don't like rap music.
