PICK OF THE WEEK
Caché – A French thriller that most of the critics are raving about. I don't know about you, but I'm not a big fan of those endings where everybody in the theater is going "What did it mean to you?" "I don't know, what did it mean to you?" Good acting anyway.
Firewall – For the past few years, movie critics have been savaging this kind of flick, mainly, for not being "realistic." It's always seemed to me that's a little like criticizing a roller coaster for not being "realistic." The problem I found with Firewall is that it's not a particularly good roller coaster. As I've said before, it's not that audiences don't like good thrillers, the problem is that Hollywood has forgotten how to make them. Computer screens, bank locations, and aging businessmen aren't particularly visual and that's why the first part of the movie drags. Then we enter a stretch of story that's awfully, awfully, familiar. And finally, a slam-bang conclusion that stretches credibility without offering any kind of satisfying rewards in return. Firewall isn't a terrible movie, but it should've been a whole lot better.
