Patterson Movie Picks Archive
PICK OF THE WEEK
Notes on a Scandal – This is probably my favorite film lately. I don't know what to make of awards but, if they make any sense, both Judy Dench & Cate Blanchett deserve them for their roles in this film. It's a nasty little film and I couldn't get enough of it.
The Good German – Looks, feels, and sounds like black-and-white film from the 40s. I absolutely loved the way it sounded, didn't have any real probably with the way it looked, but unfortunately it wasn't as sharp a story as a lot of the better films from the 40s. I kind of liked it overall, but I'm not sure if most people will—certainly, the critics didn't.
Dreamgirls – A lot of people loved the play and the movie but, unfortunately, I wasn't one of them. The problem here, for me, is I just don't care for the music. If you think about it, the idea of taking the original very black rhythm & blues sound and making it "white" shouldn't produce particularly terrific songs. Ironically, it did just that for Motown—but not, in my opinion, for Dream Girls.
