Pick of the Week

Hugo

Not everyone will agree, of course, but for me this is Martin Scorsese's greatest film—his masterpiece, possible the best movie of the year. The book on which it was based was very good, but the movie's even better, much more coherent.

Margin Call

Intelligent, thought-provoking, and therefore not for everyone.

J. Edgar

I loved Gran Torino and Million Dollar Baby. However, I'm not really sure Clint Eastwood should be the most celebrated and followed historian of our era. I have a few issues with Letters from Iwo Jima, Invictus, and J. Edgar, if only because for a lot of people, that's how they'll view some pretty key events and figures in our history.

The Rum Diary

Hunter S. Thompson was an incredibly dynamic writer but the fact that he was also an alcohol and drug addict isn't as interesting as Johnny Depp might think. You be the judge.

My Week with Marilyn

Thirteen-year-old Jack wanted to see this more than any other movie at the Cineplex—to gain a historical perspective on the icon, of course—and we both enjoyed the bittersweet biopic quite a lot. Actually, it's a pretty good story about growing up.
