Pick of the Week

Warrior

Let's start here. The trailer and ads for Warrior give away a major plot twist. Has Lion's Gate never heard of spoiler alerts? Next, an admission. Good fight films always choke me up. I've no idea why. This is a good fight flick. I got choked up.

Pick of the Week

Drive

Very well directed and acted. (I think Ryan Gosling is the best there is.) Sometimes very brutal, art-house thriller. Heroes in art-house movies are usually stoic. This one seems to be a stand for realism.

Contagion

My wife Sue didn't like it. My son's friend didn't like it. Jack liked it but thought it was a little too much like a documentary. I thought it was intelligent and well-made. And yet—does it serve any worthwhile purpose for us to feel further stressed out and hopeless about yet one more thing in our world we can't do a damn thing to prevent?

Love Crime

Let's assume—safely—that you're a reader. So why are so many readers in America opposed to films with subtitles? Why not think of them as book-movie combos? Two entertainments for the price of one. Otherwise, you'll keep missing terrific movies like this one.

I Don't Know How She Does It

Not totally horrifying but it didn't work for me or for Sue. A pretty woman balances family and job—again. Often done much better.

Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star

Even I won't go to see this one.
