Pick of the Week

Shrek Forever After

I really didn't like the trailer for this (fat cats, Rumpelstiltskin) so Jack and I avoided it for a couple weeks. But for me, at least, this is the best summer movie so far. Clever, funny, fun—everything Jack and I could have hoped for.

Pick of the Week

The Karate Kid

A couple of credibility problems, but otherwise terrific. The Patterson family's favorite family flick this summer. Fresh fun even if you saw the original half a dozen times.

The A-Team

The A-Team is a lot better than I expected. It's a fun and pretty funny summer movie that will definitely appeal to most boys. I think it was done in by its marketing. They tried to associate it with the old TV show and they shouldn't have—it's a lot cooler and funnier than that.

Get Him to the Greek

Last summer around this time, The Hangover struck me as a really funny movie with a really strong storyline. Get Him to the Greek has a couple nice performances and some funny bits, but the storyline just doesn't move you through the material very well. Also—for what it's worth—in the theater I was in, there were two older couples and they couldn't stop talking about all the bad language in the film. So, if you don't like bad language, you might want to watch something else.

Jonah Hex

I'd have to check my records, but I think this is the worst movie of the year so far (and I like Josh Brolin). Terrible direction, or editing, or both.
