Mission: Impossible - Fallout

After a mildly bumpy first couple of minutes, this episode really takes off. It might be the best one of all. Good writing, good direction, good star turns. For my money, a whole lot better than any of the comic book movies that have come our way this summer. A

Equalizer 2

I don’t remember any Denzel Washington movie that I didn’t enjoy on some level. The vigilante story is effective, although the presentation is a little by the numbers. The ending went a little too Hollywood for me. B+

Eighth Grade

I liked it but thought it would be better. The kid does a terrific job. I couldn’t get past her father – a nice guy – but like so many people out there who have no idea how to be parents. B

Crazy Rich Asians

Fun, diverting, not the usual fare. One quibble – I don’t think I learned anything about China watching this movie that takes place in China. That struck me as a little curious. A-

Mile 22

The flick is pretty interesting for about 45 minutes. Then it becomes one of those Hong Kong/karate fests, which I don’t find all that fresh or interesting. C+

My favorite movie so far this year. Very clever, twisty, intelligent plot. Some people might not like it because it’s not very cinematic. Kind of a small masterpiece, though. A

Operation Finale

This is an important story about the capture of Eichmann in South America. I wish it was a little better movie, but it’s still very emotional and powerful. B+

I like Jennifer Garner, but this is one to be avoided. The way the script was produced is terrible. The dialogue isn’t very good, and the story is even worse. A lot of the scenes don’t work. It should have been a decent enough movie, but it isn’t.C-

The Nun

I’m usually OK with horror movies, but The Nun just drags and throws up fake scares. And, once again, the dialogue is just not what we would hope for. C-

Several reviews suggested the original Predator was a classic. I felt it was the typical 50’s-style sci-fi flick with a much bigger budget and a much bigger “star.” The latest episode was funny at times. Shane Black is always funny. B-

Bad Times at the El Royale

I had medium-high expectations going into this one. Found it a bit logy. Didn’t care too much about any of the characters. Performances were all pretty good. C+

A Star Is Born

God bless Bradley Cooper. The movie is directed very well, written very well, and both he and Lady Gaga turn in nice performances. For me personally, watching someone descend into alcoholism and heavy drug use isn’t exactly what I need at the end of the day – but that’s the story, and I leave it to you to make your own decisions.A-

I like Tom Hardy a lot. But. I found this film to be just full of editing mistakes and logic problems. I also expected it to be considerably funnier than it is. Net net: people like their comic book movies – no matter how competent or incompetent they may be. C+
