Gone Girl

Total humdinger of a movie—but the book was better. Over time, 40, or 50, or 60 million Americans will see the film; only 4, or 5, or 6 million will read the book. I think we have this movie-book thing ass-backwards in this country. A-

The Skeleton Twins

Terrific performances by Bill Hader—and especially Kristen Wiig. Here's what diminished the film a little for me: the continuing Hollywood myth that an unhappy unconventional life is so much more meaningful than a contented conventional one. Honestly, what's the big deal either way? B+

The Equalizer

As usual, Denzel Washington is great. As usual, the material is way beneath his talent level. This one's interesting enough—until it gets movie-thriller-cliché-dumb-as-a-slo-mo-bullet. C+
