Pick of the Week

No Strings Attached

You kind of expect a let-down in performance from Natalie Portman, but she really does herself proud in this romantic comedy. So does Ashton Kutcher. So does Ivan Reitman, the director. The script and storytelling are pretty terrific, except that you know exactly where it's all going. Otherwise, well done.

The Rite

If there is such a thing as a thinking person's exorcism movie, this is probably it. No matter, Anthony Hopkins is always worth the price of admission.

Barney's Version

Some of my fellow patrons were raving as they left the theater, but I found this tragi-comedy uneven and unconvincing at times. Paul Giamatti is usually very good but I don't get his Golden Globes nomination for Barney.
