The Post

It’s always fascinating to see a movie when you’ve gone through the event and it’s personal for you. The acting is terrific. The direction is kind of standard Spielberg. But I always found it powerful when people do the right thing and succeed. A-

12 Strong

This is a powerful story that most people don’t know. The execution is a little too gung-ho and unbelievable, for me – but the acting is strong. B

Maze Runner: The Death Cure

It’s no Hunger Games – but it does push most of the right buttons. I found the dialogue and direction too distracting but I didn’t want to leave until the film was done. B-

Black Panther

Marvel has given us plenty of entertaining films and now they’ve produced an important one. BLACK PANTHER is a fantasy film that showcases a culture based on dignity and fairness, led by heroes who are genuine role models. A

The Greatest Showman

The critics didn’t like this one, but I found it a lot better than I had imagined it would be. A couple of staff at the movie theater raved about it to me on my way in. B+

Red Sparrow

Not nearly as good as the novel, which was one of the better thrillers in a while. Never really captures either of the two main characters. Violent at times. Never convincingly sexy. If you want to meet Dominica, you’ll have to read about her. B

7 Days in Entebbe

Very dramatic, good acting, good directing – and it also very emotionally illustrates how little progress has been made in the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. B+

The Strangers: Prey at Night

Totally unwatchable. D-

Tomb Raider

Fun at times, nothing much at risk, good photography, always nice to encounter Alicia Vikander. C+

Unsane

Claire Foy is great in a role that couldn’t be more different than her playing Queen Elizabeth. The suspense is good although there are holes in the plot you could drive a tank through. I worked my way through college in a mental hospital so this is particularly interesting to me. Also interesting was the fact the whole movie was shot on an iPhone 7 Plus. B+

I Can Only Imagine

I kind of resisted this one – but it turned out to be one of the better movies I’ve seen this year. Powerfully emotional and dramatic – and it tells the story about a group that I’m not as familiar with as I ought to be. A-

A Quiet Place

The best thriller/ horror I’ve seen in ages. Nearly flawless suspense, direction, performances. A+

Blockers

Surprisingly (for me) funny, and even touching. A-
