Q.

Where can I get your list of books to make a child become a page-turner? My son is a 10 year old who does not love (at all) to read. He has to read 8 approved (by his 5th grade teacher) books each trimester and the ones that they recommended are really hard for him to read because he has no interest in the subjects that the last 8 books were about–He is really in to Sports and he likes Math–I was hoping to get some ideas from you of books we could have his teacher approve and he could start reading those instead of the ones the school has mentioned! Thank you very much!

A. Dear Jennifer,

Funny you should ask a question like that. In a few months, I'm hoping to start a whole website that will list great books for kids of every interest and age level. Stay tuned for details on that.

For the moment, though, best I can offer is this list that Parade Magazine ran back in December. Some of the titles are easier than others. For readability, I'd recommend maybe James and the Giant Peach and Holes for starters.

If your son's into sports, Tiki and Ronde Barber (the professional football players) have some good books out there, Kickoff is probably right for a 5th grader. And have you tried those popular Matt Christopher sports books?

I confess I haven't heard of a lot of readable math-related books, but I'll ask around and see what I can find out.

Also, I don't mean to toot my own horn, but a lot of parents have reported success getting their non-reader kids started with my Maximum Ride books.

Hope that helps, and thank you for taking such an interest in your son's reading. He'll come to thank you for it, I promise.

All my best,
JP
